Bringing a bit of the exam room to the browser.

eyexams began with a simple question: how much of a basic vision check-in can a screen do well — enough to help someone notice a change and take it seriously? This is an educational exploration of that idea.

What this project is — and what it demonstrates.

eyexams is a solo-built, from-scratch web platform that turns eight established optometric methods into working, self-guided tools. It's here to show how I think about eye care: rigorously, accessibly, and with a clear sense of a screening tool's limits.

What I built

Four interactive self-screenings (visual acuity, astigmatism dial, Amsler grid, Farnsworth-style color arrangement) and four vision-training exercises (convergence & accommodative facility, saccades, smooth pursuit, and a 20-20-20 strain-relief timer) — twelve pages, all functional in the browser.

How it's engineered

Astro + TypeScript, hand-written DOM, SVG, Canvas, and Web Audio — no UI frameworks or charting libraries. A token-based design system drives a consistent look with automatic dark mode, keyboard support, and prefers-reduced-motion fallbacks.

The clinical thinking

Each tool is grounded in the real method it models — Snellen geometry, Sturm's conoid, macular field mapping, cone-confusion lines, vergence/accommodative therapy, oculomotor training — and every one states plainly what it can't tell you. Screening, never diagnosis.

Every tool page includes a "science behind this" explainer with its mechanism, what it measures, and its limitations.

Access to eye care isn't evenly distributed, and small vision changes often go unnoticed until they affect daily life. eyexams brings a set of well-established screening ideas — acuity charts, the Amsler grid, astigmatism dials, hue-arrangement tests — into interactive, self-guided tools, paired with vision-training exercises that challenge specific visual skills.

The goal isn't to replace an optometrist. It's the opposite: to help people understand their own vision a little better, notice when something's off, and feel more confident walking into a real exam. Every tool is transparent about what it can and can't tell you.
